“Serena Onlus” project: man’s best friend as a watchdog for glycemic variations
THE PROJECT AND ITS AIMS
The Serena Foundation is mainly concerned with preparing Diabetes Alert Dogs, four-legged companions who anticipate and signal hypo/hyper glycemic crises for those with Type 1 diabetes. The instructors are dog handlers and experts in relational ethology and are registered with Aics.
With the support of the FPM and instructor Sara De Cristofaro, a relationship of friendship and support has been created between young Andrea and the affectionate and intelligent dog Maya.
A SPECIAL GUARDIAN
Maya’s and Andrea’s journey together continues! They are now ready to confront challenges outside of the house, on public transportation, and in crowded rooms, in which stimuli and distractions multiply, but, by now, Maya has become very good at keeping watch over the blood sugar variations of her little master, who rewards her with lots of cuddles and a good bone!
DIPLOMA AWARD CEREMONY
The little dog Maya has completed her journey of training that lasted two years, and was declared suitable to be a diabetes alert dog. The ceremony took place at the foundation in the presence of Roberto Zampieri, president of the Associazione Serena Onlus.
Thanks to this diploma, she will be able to accompany her little master, Andrea, in all his activities, and watch over the variations in his glycemic levels.
